How to Monitor Children’s Computers

Step 1

Go to Tools, Pop-Up Blocker in Internet Explorer and select “turn-on” Pop-Up Blocker. Enabling the Pop-up Blocker prevents malicious websites and downloads to the computer. Go to Tools, Options and Security to do the same on the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Step 2

Go to Tools, Internet Options and select the Security tab. Click on the “Internet Globe.” Below “Security level for this zone,” check the box to the left of “Enable Protected Mode.” The protected mode provides levels of security and data protection for Windows 7 and Windows Vista users. In Mozilla Firebox click on Tools, Options and the Security tab. Place a check mark in the first three boxes, which are: “Warn me when sites try to install add-ons,” “Block reported attack sites” and “Block reported Web forgeries.”

Step 3

Delete the history of the computer by selecting Tools and “Delete Browsing History.” Deleting the browser history removes temporary Internet files, cookies and previous websites accessed from the computer. “Deleting the Cache” (deleting Internet files, cookies and history) allows the computer to run more efficiently. In Firefox click on Tools and “Clear Recent History.”

Step 4

Go to Tools, select the “Privacy” tab and change the “Internet zone” setting by clicking and dragging the vertical bar up to the “Medium High” setting. This blocks third-party cookies (files) that save information that can be used to contact, spam and infiltrate the computer without consent. Changing the Internet zone setting helps to bar spam and malicious websites.

Step 5

Go to Tools, “Internet options” and select “Content.” Choose the “Parental Controls” tab. Under “Content Advisor,” click on the “Enable” button. Click on the “Ratings” tab and move the adjustable slider to the right, to the “Limited” setting, and then click “Apply” at the bottom of the screen. To set parental controls on Firefox you will need to download free third-party extensions or “add-ons” and install to your Firefox browser

Different way to Lock Computer in Win XP

SoftIT

There are several ways to lock your Windows XP computer, but all of them use the same command line. The method you choose is a matter of personal preference.

  1. Via the keyboard
The easiest way to lock Windows XP is by simply pressing the Windows logo key and the letter L (for Lock) on a Microsoft Natural Keyboard or any other compatible keyboard that includes the Window key. Doing so will pop up the Unlock Computer Password box.
  2. Via a Shortcut.
If you don’t have a keyboard with a Window key or simply don’t like the keyboard method, then here’s how you can make a desktop shortcut to lock your computer.

Right click an empty area of your desktop, choose New/Shortcut and enter this line as the command line:

          rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

Click Next. Name the shortcut whatever you prefer and click Finish. That’s it.

If you’d like to change the icon, just right click the shortcut and go to Properties/Shortcut/Change Icon.

  3. Via the command line
The above command line can also be used at a DOS prompt to lock your computer. One simple way you can do it would be by clicking Start/Run, typing CMD and then entering the command and pressing Enter.
  4. Via a bat file
This is similar to a Windows shortcut method. But it’s a DOS version. If you’ve never created a bat (batch) file, but would like to try this method, simply open a new text file (such as with Notepad) and type the following commands:

      @echo off
              rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation
              cls
Save the file with a .bat extension, such as Lock.bat, and you’re done. Double click to make the file run. Those are the basic methods to lock XP, but there are some other relating factors of which you should be aware.

Password
It should go without saying that if you don’t use a password to log on to your computer, then anyone can access your computer and unlock it. If you want to use the lock feature, then set a password by going to User Accounts in the Control Panel and then click Create Password.

Fast User Switching
Fast User Switching allows multiple login sessions at the same time. Whether you have this feature enabled or disabled will make a big difference in how your locked computer can be accessed and on the behavior of your shortcuts when executed.

If enabled, executing any of the above locking methods will bring up the Welcome screen and other users will be able to log on to the computer, as is the norm for Fast User Switching. So, you really don’t get much security at all this way, if your intention is to lock your machine. With Fast User Switching, only your profile is locked, not the ability for other users to log into your system. Any other user can just log on to your computer and use it.

If Fast User Switching is disabled, you will have to enter a password to unlock the computer. Double clicking your shortcut will bring up the Unlock Computer password dialog box. This is the same lock method that Windows NT and 2000 uses.

If you’re not sure whether or not you have Fast User Switching enabled or disabled, go to User Accounts in the Control Panel and click the Change the way users log on or off tab. There you will see your status for Fast User Switching.

Welcome Screen
Whether the Welcome screen is enabled or disabled also has an effect on the way your computer can be locked.

If the Welcome screen is enabled, you can also lock your computer in Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) by clicking the Lock Computer option in the Shutdown menu list. This option will only appear if the Welcome screen is enabled—without Fast User Switching being enabled.

Note! In order to use Fast User Switching, the Welcome screen must be enabled. You cannot select Fast User Switching if the Welcome screen option is unchecked.

If the Welcome screen is disabled, you can lock the computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then clicking the Lock Computer tab in the Windows Security dialog box that comes up.

Detect Outside User on Your Wireless Network

Here is the procedure of how you can detect an outside user is on your wireless network.

  • Open your web browser and input your default gateway’s IP address.
    • Go to Start > run, and type cmd
    • Type ipconfig and press enter. It will list the default gateway. Once you have your default gateway address, open your web browser and type it in the URL bar
  • Input your router’s username and password.
    • Default for Dlink routers is Username: Admin; Password: (blank)
    • Default for Netgear routers is Username: admin password: password
    • Default for Linksys products is usually username: (blank) password: admin
    • Default for Siemens routers is Username: Admin; Password: admin (all lowercase).
    • Default User Names and Passwords can be found sometimes under the router, on the label or using Google.
  • If you are using the default username and password, go to the Administration tab to change it to something more secure.  From the Router’s user interface you will probably have a setting to log Users going through the router-enable it.
  • Use the steps shown above finding the default gateway to find your MAC or also called physical address of all computers/devices that use wireless in your home or that will be using it. From time to time check the log to see if any unknown addresses show up. If so, then someone is leeching off your internet. MAC/physical addresses are unique hexadecimal code that identifies each Network card inside every PC that uses Ethernet. No two MAC addresses are the same.

FIND WHO IS ON YOUR NETWORK

  • Navigate to the Setup tab.
  • Scroll down until you see ‘DHCP Server’ if it is enabled, continue to the next step. If it isn’t enabled, enable it.
  • Click on the “Status” tab and then on “Local Network”
  • This list will tell you the computer name of everyone connected to your network on DHCP (DHCP automatically configures a computer’s IP and DNS settings. This only works if everyone connected uses DHCP. If someone connects and uses their own static address
